Vitamin A plays an essential role in the body of animals, including at various stages of development and functioning of the nervous system, together with brain structures associated with the formation of emotions and behavior. The content of retinol in American mink (Neogale vison), selected to promote or eliminate defensive reactions toward humans (aggressive or tame behavior) was studied. Organ and tissue samples were collected from groups of aggressive (-3) and tame (+6) mink in spring (late March 2021, 11-month-old males) and summer (June 2023, 13-month-old males and females). The content of retinol was determined by HPLC. Aggressive mink males, tested in spring, had the lowest vitamin A status and lower retinol levels in the heart and spleen compared to tame males. No differences in retinol levels were found between females with different behavioral types. Differences between aggressive females and tame males studied in the summer were found in the kidneys, heart, and skeletal muscle. It can be assumed that long-term selection of American mink for behavior has influenced the elaborate multi-level system that regulates vitamin A content in the body. Under conditions of increased demand, animals with aggressive behavior may experience significant reductions in vitamin A levels in certain organs.
